Why You May Feel Safer with a Christian Coach
TABLE OF CONTENTS
A. Who is a Christian Life Coach?
B. What About Other Coaches?
C. Will a Christian Coach Cram Their Beliefs Down My Throat?
D. Advantages/Disadvantages?
Section A content:
Any coach who refers to herself/himself as a Christian coach is letting you know something about their value system. More than likely they base theirapproach on how Jesus dealt with people’s needs and on Bible truths. They are disclosing this information about themselves either because they prefer to
work with Christian clients facing problems or they want to reassure a potential client that they incorporate Christian perspective and principles into their approach.
Section B content:
Other coaches who do not specify their spiritual or religious beliefs may have a broad range of beliefs. Many are Buddhists, Hindu, Muslims, agnostics, or atheists. In other words, they probably have principles they are guided by and are likely to teach you techniques consistent with those beliefs or principles. Sometimes Christian coaches provide service that is consistent with their beliefs but don’t market themselves as “Christian coaches.” Often, if you do not ask, coaches don’t bring up their own beliefs. That is their personal choice. Hopefully, no coach is condemning or judgmental of a client who
believes something different from themselves.
One caution, however, is that as a Christian who is a life coach, I believe that I gain strength beyond my own from God’s guidance, His Word (the Bible) and that kind of strength is quite powerful. Insight into what a client needs, feels, or will benefit from may be based on intuitive knowledge coming from my personal relationship with Christ. I do not coerce anyone to believe what I believe. My hope that I model the love and respect that Jesus gave anyone who wanted true spiritual help. I fully respect whatever my client chooses to believe.
Section C content:
Advantages to one approach over another is highly subjective. If you are a Christian and your coach is helping you, you can be sure that he/she is praying for you and asking God to guide every aspect of your coaching experience. If you are not a Christian but are seeking spiritual truth, a
Christian coach will share what he/she believes to be Truth. But, no compassionate coach will attempt to force you to believe or practice a faith that you don’t accept. God does not do that. One of the most important freedoms human beings have is to choose who they serve. I believe that God
only wants followers who choose to follow Him. Disadvantages of hiring a Christian coach could be that your coach uses only strategies that involve certain practices like Bible study, worship, or prayer in proscribed ways. I have not found most Christian coaches do that, but it could happen with whatever your coach believes about the spiritual realm.
